Israeli scientists at Tel Aviv University have identified a mechanism that allows breast cancer cells to metastasize to the brain and survive there. The key involves the loss of the p53 gene combined with increased activity of the SCD1 enzyme, which helps cancer cells produce fatty acids in the brain environment. By inhibiting SCD1 in preclinical models (mice and human tissue samples), the team significantly reduced the formation and growth of brain metastases. This finding could lead to new targeted therapies, better prediction of metastasis risk, and improved treatment options for patients with advanced breast cancer that spreads to the brain. The research was published in late 2025 and is one of several ongoing efforts from Israeli institutions in oncology. No complete cure for primary brain cancers like glioblastoma has been announced recently. #BrainCancer #BreastCancer
