POV: BRUV Episode 2 - The Reef Boss If you ever run into a giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) on the reef, you’ll know it. These jacks can grow up to six feet long and weigh over 130 pounds. They are strong swimmers and fierce apex predators who primarily eat fish, squid, and crustaceans, but have been known to also take down small turtles and birds. If they had a motto, it might be “bite first, ask questions later.” But there’s a method to the muscle: by patrolling the reef and keeping mid-level populations in check, these bosses ensure the entire ecosystem stays healthy and in balance. Baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs) are a scientific surveying tool that uses unmanned high-definition cameras to spot and record species on a reef.
