I think it wasn’t until my third visit to Africa that I truly met a cheetah up close. I don’t even remember taking this photo, but I know it was in the Serengeti. There are so many cheetahs in this stretch of wilderness, I almost got spoiled. Oh look, another cheetah. An estimated 300+ roam this area. Cheetah cubs. Coalitions of brothers. A mother who, against all odds, raised five cubs to near adulthood—an extraordinary feat if you know anything about cheetah survival in the wild. They are, without question, the most breathtaking creatures to watch. I’ve been lucky enough to witness a handful of hunts … lightning-fast, heart-stopping moments—but never captured them on camera. I’m not quick enough to catch a cheetah in full flight. Maybe that’s okay. Some things are meant to live in memory, not on film.
