It doesn't help to say that disasters, like the one happening in Joshimath, are caused by nature, climate change, or the people who live there. All of these things went wrong because of decisions made in New Delhi. First, the Centre's unwavering support for big hydropower projects, even after the Kedarnath tragedy in 2013. It was clear that the high amount of sediment in paraglacial zones was a big problem for the long-term health of the hydroelectric projects in Uttarakhand that were already built or were in the process of being built.
