When land is used to raise animals instead of crops, valuable water and soil are wasted, trees are cut down to make room for grazing or factory farm sheds, and rivers and streams are contaminated by animal waste that hasn't been cleaned up. In fact, eating meat is so bad for the environment as a whole that the Union of Concerned Scientists lists it as one of the most dangerous things for the environment. Globally, animal farming creates more greenhouse gases than all of the world's transportation systems put together. No wonder, when you think about things like: *A cow needs to eat 16 pounds of plants in order to turn 1 pound of plants into 1 pound of meat. More than half of all the water used in the U.S. is used to raise animals for food. A pound of meat needs 2,500 gallons of water to grow, but a pound of wheat only needs 25 gallons. *The fossil fuel used to make just one hamburger is enough to drive a small car 20 miles.
