We weren’t supposed to care. But I did.
In 2009, I created ‘The Creative Journey’. It was an empowering art program at the Union Gospel Mission for women living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
We literally pulled women off the street, began in a tiny chapel in the shelter and then.. magic happened.
It started as a simple offering. Then it became a lifeline.
A safe space to be seen.
To feel. To create. To heal.
My heart burst with love for I witnessed such beautiful transformations.
Some of the women had fled from abusive relationships, while others were questioning their very existence. One woman lost everything in a house fire, while another struggled with mental and physical disabilities.
You see, everyone is on a journey with trials and tribulations. It is with compassion that we can make a difference even if it doesn’t feel like it in this state of the world today. Change begins within and we must support and empower each other.
