I was 22 years old when I walked into a renowned gallery with my portfolio (long before social media was even a thing).
It surprises me this art dealer is still in business. She said, “you should be careful to call yourself an artist”, as she handed back my portfolio and lifted her nose. I felt depleted…BUT never gave up.
Fast forward twenty years and at my retrospective, she had the balls to attend.
When I saw her, I was in the company of one of my biggest collectors. I just sold a $60,000 painting when she approached us.
I said to her, “do you remember me and the advice you gave when I came into your gallery as a young budding artist?”
I didn’t even give her time to respond. But I was sure to remind her- and also that she should be inspiring young artists. Then I asked security to escort her out of the gallery.
