🦘 Unlike most mammals, newborn kangaroos are extremely underdeveloped at birth. After just 34 days of gestation, the tiny jelly bean-sized joey makes an incredible journey - climbing through its mother's fur to reach the safety of the pouch. Once there, it attaches to a teat and feeds continuously for over two months. At six months, the joey begins taking short trips outside the pouch, returning to feed. Red kangaroos permanently leave the pouch at eight months but continue nursing for 3-4 more months. Grey kangaroos stay longer, leaving at 11 months and nursing until 18 months old. Female kangaroos have remarkable reproductive abilities - they can simultaneously nurse two different-aged joeys with two different milk compositions while carrying a fertilized egg ready for development. Only females have pouches since males don't produce milk or rear young. _____ šŸŽ„ courtesy of: @animaledventures #science #kangaroo #wildanimal #kangaroopoint #kangarooisland #kangaroos #ka...
