Kandanar Kelan Theyyam is one of the most powerful and fiery Theyyams performed in North Kerala, especially in the Kannur and Kasaragod regions.
According to legend, Kandanar Kelan was a hunter who died in a forest fire while worshipping Lord Shiva. Later, he was deified and became a symbol of courage, devotion, and divine justice. During the performance, the Theyyam artist enacts Kelan’s fiery rebirth — often with flames, fire torches, and intense drum beats — creating a dramatic and spiritual atmosphere.
