‘2 On’ Tinashe ft. ScHoolboy Q (2014)
“2 On” dropped January 21, 2014 as the debut commercial single from Tinashe’s first studio album Aquarius via RCA Records, featuring ScHoolboy Q on a guest verse and produced by DJ Mustard, Jon Redwine, and DJ Marley Waters — a West Coast production trio that gave the record its signature bounce and locked it into the club-ready R&B lane Mustard was dominating at the time. Built on effervescent keys, trap hi-hats, synth-string accents, and a sample from Sean Paul’s “We Be Burnin’,” the production was a deliberate step away from the murky, introspective alternative R&B Tinashe had been crafting on her mixtapes, and she was upfront about that — she wanted people to hear her make a radio record without losing the credibility of her earlier work. ScHoolboy Q’s verse adds the West Coast grit the beat called for, riding the Mustard production naturally given their shared Compton and TDE/Black Hippy adjacency at the time.
