One Jersey lawmaker, senatorandykim, told
NJ.com the plan is “insane.”
State officials are scrambling after ICE spent $129.3 million to buy a 470,000-square-foot warehouse right off Route 46 in Roxbury, where they plan to turn it into a jail that can house up to 1,500 detainees.
ICE told
NJ.com they “carefully evaluated the use of existing facilities to help minimize environmental impacts, including potential impacts to protected species, sensitive natural resources, and valued cultural resources.”
Gov. Mikie Sherrill filed suit Friday to block the move. Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim dropped new legislation in Congress to stop it. Even Roxbury’s Republican council asked the Trump administration to reconsider.
