Comment “load” & I’ll share you a detail write-up of how to explain this in an interview 🙌🏻
Your load balancer is returning 503 for 20% of requests — what’s your immediate step?
1. Check LB target health — see if some instances/pods are marked unhealthy.
2. Verify recent deploy/config changes — rollback if errors started right after rollout.
3. Check backend metrics — CPU, memory, thread pool saturation, connection limits.
4. Remove/replace unhealthy instances from LB and scale out the service temporarily.
5. Throttle excessive traffic at edge (rate limiting) and increase cache usage to reduce load.
6. Check logs & health-check endpoints to confirm why LB thinks backends are unhealthy.
7. Monitor 503 rate after mitigation and then work on RCA (health check misconfig, overload, bug)
