Sotheby’s will bring a major slice of the late dealer Robert Mnuchin’s personal collection to auction this May — a tightly curated group of blue-chip postwar masterpieces expected to exceed $130M. Leading the sale is Mark Rothko’s monumental 1957 canvas Brown and Blacks in Reds, estimated at $70–100 million, one of just fifteen monumental paintings the artist produced that year. The nearly eight-foot work dates from Rothko’s most important decade, when he perfected the luminous fields of color that define his legacy. Also included are major works by Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Jeff Koons, reflecting Mnuchin’s sharp eye for museum-caliber postwar art and the collection he built over decades with his wife Adriana. With scarcity of top-tier material defining the current auction market, this sale is likely to become one of the headline moments of the New York May auctions. #artmarket #rothko #sothebys #abstractexpressionism #postwarart
