The ADHD overstimulation explosion is very real. Before my diagnosis, I used to feel a surge of pure agitation that made my skin feel like it was on fire. I would snap at whoever was nearby. Then the anger would vanish, only to be replaced by a massive wave of shame. I wasn't angry at my kids; I was chemically overwhelmed. The regulator in my brain failed, and the pressure valve blew from too much input. Understanding the biology of adult ADHD does not excuse the behavior. We still need to apologize. Since my diagnosis, I had conversations with my kids to apologize and let them know I am a work in progress. Knowing this is a system failure and not malice explains why it happens.
