My solo show at GDM in HK has come to a close. It’s been a profound marker of me moving to HK for most of the year. I’ve been in a temporary studio in the porcelain capital of China producing a body of porcelain scholar rock sculptures. Thank you to GDM: “Scholar’s rocks” are naturally occurring shaped rocks; they were highly favored by the Chinese literati, who would display them in their studios to reflect upon them as a symbolic microcosm of the universe. They are coveted for their natural beauty, including their unique asymmetry, bearing resemblance to mountainous landscapes believed to be inhabited by immortal figures in Chinese mythology. The symbol of the scholar’s rock evinces the artist’s continued exploration of ‘meditative focal points’ between nature and human civilization in the digital age.
