Do dogs truly love their owners? To help answer that question, Dr. Greg Berns scanned dogs’ brains while they were awake in an fMRI machine. The dogs smelled cotton swabs carrying different scents, including the sweat of a stranger and the sweat of their owner. Berns found the part of a dog’s brain that lights up when they smell their owner’s scent is the caudate nucleus, often called the brain’s "reward center.” According to Dr. Berns, it showed that the dog is recognizing somebody important to them.
