Missed deadlines, personality clashes, scope creep, budget overruns: There are plenty of factors that can spark friction on projects. Yet nearly a quarter of workers say their manager handles conflict poorly, according to a 2022 study by The Myers-Briggs Co. The solution? Become a people-centric leader, says Soumya Maitra, PMP, manager of client integration at Fidelity Clearing Canada in Toronto.
“There’s no point going into conflict management without knowing what all parties want and need,” he explains.
Maitra offers four tips to ensure discord won’t disrupt project progress.
1. Be proactive.
2. Listen with intent and empathy.
3. Defuse defensiveness.
4. Seek common ground.
