I read labels and try to eat clean 🥗
but most new food chemicals today don’t go through a full fda safety review.
A loophole called GRAS (“generally recognized as safe”) lets companies decide many ingredients are safe without independent fda oversight — and since 2000, nearly 99% of new chemicals entered the food system that way.
Some bills in Congress would only increase disclosure — which is a good first step, but experts like EWG say that doesn’t fix the root problem.
EWG supports stronger bills — like the Grocery Reform and Safety Act (H.R. 4958) and similar proposals — that would close the GRAS loophole, require fda to look at the latest science for chemicals that have not been reassessed for safety in decades, and provide the resources to do so .
Real food safety = stronger oversight, not weaker rules.
