They can follow the steps… but they don’t truly understand the math. Change the numbers. Change the context. Ask them why… and it falls apart. That’s not motivation. That’s thinking. In grades 3–5, procedures aren’t enough. Students need reasoning, strategy, and real number sense. More practice won’t fix it. Better thinking will.
