As we say goodbye to another year, AJSOCAL is asking supporters to look back and remember stories of hope and empowerment.
One client, Cam, who has cerebral palsy, was adopted by naturalized immigrant parents. Cam is non-verbal, making it impossible for him to pass his citizenship interview alone and ineligible for government benefits like disability.
So what did we do? AJSOCAL filed a N648 medical disability waiver and argued that his adoption certificate conferred legal guardianship, allowing his father to represent him in his interview. In the end, both the waiver and the legal guardianship were granted! Cam is now a naturalized citizen.
Cam’s family is one bound by love, not just by biology. It’s a reality that many immigrants form found families, and thanks to AJSOCAL, Cam was finally able to gain to a social safety net that many immigrants have been paying for for years.
