Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo bid farewell to a towering bur oak tree, estimated to be 250-300 years old and a landmark at the zoo. Despite efforts to keep the tree healthy, it was determined to be 80% dead and posed a safety risk. The zoo is partnering with the Morton Arboretum to preserve the tree's genetics and repurpose its wood for memorials, educational tools, and art. Visitors were invited to say goodbye and write thank-you notes to the tree at an Arbor Day event. Though the tree's reign has come to an end, its legacy will live on.
