This doesn’t mean strength isn’t important.
It means most athletes are already strong enough but not aerobically fit enough.
Here are five reasons running matters more.
1. Running is half the race
HYROX includes 8 km of running. That’s often 40 to 50 percent of total race time. If your running pace improves, your entire race time drops.
2. Running controls your heart rate
Your aerobic engine determines how quickly your heart rate settles after each station. The fitter runner always recovers faster.
3. Running determines how stations feel
A sled push feels completely different when you arrive breathing under control versus redlining from the run before.
4. Running protects the back half of the race
Most athletes slow dramatically in the final three runs. Strong runners maintain pace while others fade.
