The Union Weapons Conservatory had not expected to lose anything. Least of all a disruptor. Least of all that disruptor.
When Chief Curator Halvorsen realised the antiquated X7F3 was missing, he panicked in a way he had not panicked since the climate failure on Pheris Minor, which was saying something. Who, in any sane corner of the galaxy, would want such a relic? And who would have the audacity to steal it from a Union orbital?
The answer, apparently, was someone with either remarkable courage or a terminal disregard for consequences.
Worse still, the weapon had been displayed alongside its original mute case, an obsolete but effective dampening field designed to smother its signature entirely. No energy trace. No diagnostic whisper. To the ship’s sensors, the case might as well have been a lunchbox.
Which meant it hadn’t simply vanished.
It had been taken.
And whoever had done it had known exactly what they were looking for.
