Como is regarded as the central city on Lake Como today. However, the rich history of our lake reveals a time when the area was fragmented into independent dominions that occasionally even clashed in conflict.
This fragmentation arose from the decline of the Roman military roads that once linked Lake Como to Rome and Germany. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, these routes fell into disrepair, making water travel essential.
Located in the northern part of Lake Como, Rezzonico appears as a quaint village today, but it was once a pivotal centre of power in the Italian peninsula.
A large castle, which is still inhabited, dominates the landscape of Rezzonico and occupies a substantial portion of it.
The Della Torre di Rezzonico dynasty, also known as the Torriani (both translate to ‘Of/From the Tower’), originated here and exerted considerable influence over much of northern Italy, particularly from the 12th century onward.
