Hadrian’s Wall ran about 73 miles across northern Britain from the Tyne to the Solway Firth. Emperor Hadrian ordered it as a fixed frontier to mark the edge of Roman Britannia, control movement, and deter raids from the peoples beyond. Who were they facing? South of the wall lived Romanised Britons in towns and farms. North of it were independent northern tribes (ancestors of peoples later called Picts and others) who resisted Roman rule and raided for cattle, slaves and goods, creating constant frontier tension.
