Around 750: Shipbuilding and sailing tech leap forward; trading towns like Ribe and Hedeby grow; Arabic silver starts pouring in via Baltic–Rus’ routes. These changes set up the first widescale raids and voyages (famously Lindisfarne, 793). Around 1050: Raiding fades as Scandinavia Christianizes and forms stable kingdoms (Denmark, Norway, Sweden). Coin economies and towns replace tribute raids; European defenses harden; Cnut’s North Sea empire breaks up in the 1030s–40s. Many cap the story with Stamford Bridge (1066), but the classic “Viking” pattern is mostly over by ~1050.
