However, in 1986, his division suffered a massive $100 million loss due to a misjudged interest rate bet, which led to his departure. This turning point inspired Fink to build a firm grounded in risk management.   Moving Forward: Partnering with Blackstone In 1988, Fink co-founded a new firm under the umbrella of The Blackstone Group, initially called Blackstone Financial Management. He secured a $5 million credit line from Blackstone in exchange for a 50% stake in the bond business.
