This is a cut down version of a longer video I was recording, it’s difficult to explain something technical like this in just 90 seconds but the main issue is this - high temperatures for longer periods can be more damaging than one extremely hot day. A lot of the news stories that we are seeing are focusing on figures, like the 52.9C reading in Delhi which IMD now says was due to a faulty sensor. But what matters is that we have been consistently living under almost 50C temperatures last few days. And the heatwaves in South Asia are getting longer. While earlier we used to see 10-15 days of 40C plus heat now the extreme summer starts from March and April. And that is a bigger problem. The longer you are exposed to heatwaves the weaker your body is. We can recover from one day of heat but longer and sustained heatwaves don’t give us that opportunity.
