“But you’re skinny.”
I’ve gotten this in my DMs since my viral skinny culture reel. Who am I to be talking about “skinny culture” when I’m skinny. 🤦♀️🙄
Yes, I’m petite. 5’3” and 115lbs. But petite and skinny are not the same thing.
I’m 49. I’ve been a nutritionist specializing in metabolic health and hormones for over 20 years. And the most dangerous compliment a woman over 40 can receive is “you look so thin.”
Because here’s what my DEXA scan actually shows: substantial glutes, substantial quads, lower body muscle mass significantly higher than average for my age, ideal bone density, and near zero visceral fat. At 20% body fat, I am not skinny. I am not frail. I am strong.
And that matters. Because thin without muscle after menopause looks like osteoporosis, sarcopenia, insulin resistance, falls that break hips, and a body that cannot regulate its own blood sugar.
Muscle mass is the single greatest predictor of metabolic health, functional independence, and longevity in women...
