I took this photo in Afghanistan. War gets turned into headlines and arguments, but the reality is simple. A child sitting in the dust, in front of a home that barely feels like shelter. My heart goes out to people living across the Middle East, Iran and Afghanistan, and to the families watching from far away. It is terrifying to be caught in conflict, especially when it sits on top of years of oppression by the regime and fear. I want the bloodshed and suffering to end for civilians, regardless of their backgrounds. Afghanistan has lived through more than four decades of imposed wars. I witnessed 15 years of it myself. The consequences show up in daily fear, displacement, and in what children learn to expect from the world far too early.
