During the COVID pandemic, there were days when I knew exactly what care should look like.
And still couldn’t offer it.
Not because we didn’t care.
Not because we didn’t know what to do.
But because the system could not meet the need.
That tension stays with you.
When you know the right thing, want to do the right thing, and still cannot make it happen, the cost runs deeper than fatigue.
This is not burnout.
It is moral injury.
Naming this matters, because it helps us stop asking people to cope better and start asking what needs to change.
