Sometimes handcuffs arrive before a name. If we stop at the cuffs, we miss the person. Distress does not always look polite. For some, acting out is the only language they have for pain. Risk can be managed without removing dignity. Start at eye level. Use a name. Listen for the story beneath the behaviour. Compassion is not soft.
