Mayinias Altar V - Abuela Guatavita, 2025
Guatavita is a sacred lake in Colombia where the Spanish came chasing gold, blind to the true treasure; In Muisca mythology, Guatavita was believed to be the name of a female spiritual figure. One legend tells of an abuela who descended from the mountain to bring awareness to the people, becoming part of the sacred waters, a symbol of sorrow, rebirth, and feminine energy.
Now, she rises again in Mayinia’s altar, a series of sculptures not as myth, but as memory reclaimed, with her wisdom, her rituals, her power. A body of water, a body of resistance.
She carries the Leyenda del Dorado between her legs, not as conquest, but as creation.
Her body opens a horizontal portal, rooted in the earth, braided with ancestral cosmovisions.
Ceramics, human and synthetic hair, leather, Colombian Jute.
