Mayinias Altar Series Abuelita Esther, 2025, is a portrait of my grandmother and the fascinating person that she is. She had six children and carried most of the responsibility for them during a challenging time with my alcoholic grandfather, who was also a writer and philosopher. Esther, at 87 years old, is still painting her nails and applying her red lipstick. She is an example of a strong woman, which is why the “corotos,” as we call them in Colombia, are significant to her. She was responsible for her family, and the six fingers that extend from her body symbolize her beautiful six children.
