It was captured using an extremely powerful transmission electron microscope, which fires a beam of electrons through a sample and records how those electrons scatter. Because atoms are far smaller than visible light wavelengths, normal cameras cannot see them. Electron microscopes overcome this limit by using electrons instead of light. The bright dot in the center represents an individual atom positioned between two tiny supports, making the otherwise invisible building blocks of matter observable.
