El Ojo behaves like a floating disk sitting inside a water ring. The island is made of compacted vegetation and peat, which is less dense than water, so buoyancy keeps it afloat. Water flows through the surrounding channel create shear forces along its edges. These uneven currents apply torque, slowly rotating the island. Over time, erosion smooths both the island and its boundary, maintaining the near perfect circle while reducing friction, making continuous rotation easier.
