The tracks come from a Mars rover making turns and navigation maneuvers while exploring the terrain. When rovers change direction, spin in place, or test movement, their wheels can leave looping patterns in the soil. From above, some of those patterns can accidentally resemble familiar shapes. This particular image shows wheel tracks left by the Spirit rover, which landed on Mars in 2004 and explored the planet’s surface for several years.
