In 1947 engineers working on the Harvard Mark II electromechanical computer discovered that a real moth had become trapped inside one of the machine’s relays causing a malfunction. The insect was carefully removed and taped into the team’s logbook with the note first actual case of a bug being found. Engineers had already used the word bug informally for technical faults but this incident helped popularize the term debugging and bug in computing culture around the world of modern technology.
