In 1994, images of Pluto taken by the Hubble Space Telescope showed only blurry patches of light and dark, barely revealing surface differences. By 2018, using detailed data from New Horizons, scientists produced stunning global maps showing mountains of water ice, nitrogen plains, and the famous heart shaped region. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union because it does not clear its orbital neighborhood of other objects. While it orbits the Sun and is round, it shares its region with many Kuiper Belt bodies, so it no longer met the full criteria to be called a planet under the updated definition.
