In 2014, the first close images of comet Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko came from the European Space Agency mission Rosetta. After waking from hibernation, Rosetta captured its first sighting in March from millions of kilometers away, and later that year the Philae lander sent back the first ever surface photos. These images revealed a dark, rubber duck shaped world covered in dust and ice, helping scientists study primitive solar system material and understand how comets may have delivered water and organic molecules to early Earth.
