Katie VanBlaricum is an insect artist and wildlife volunteer who performed a delicate wing transplant on a Monarch butterfly with a deformed wing so it could fly again. She used fine tools, adhesive, and a matching wing from a dead butterfly to replace the damaged section, taking care not to stress the insect. Because butterfly wings are mostly chitinous and lack blood vessels, the added piece acted like a lightweight prosthetic surface, enabling restored flight.
