This scene shows the famous camel thorn trees of Deadvlei in Namibia, where long dead trees remain preserved because the desert air is too dry for decay. The black trunks appear like silhouettes due to harsh sunlight and deep shadows. The bright orange background is not sky but a massive sand dune lit by low angle sunlight, which intensifies its iron rich red color. The ground is a clay pan, which means it was once the floor of a shallow water basin. Thousands of years ago, seasonal floods from a nearby river reached this area, letting camel thorn trees grow.
