Iceland’s famous black sand beaches, like Reynisfjara on the south coast, get their color from volcanic basalt rock. Iceland sits on a tectonic ridge with frequent eruptions that produce lava rich in dark minerals. When hot lava flows into the cold ocean or is blasted out as ash, it cools and solidifies into basalt. Over time, waves, wind, and glaciers grind these volcanic rocks into tiny grains of black sand.
