The United Kingdom is developing the DragonFire high-energy laser directed-energy weapon to defend naval fleets by destroying drones and similar aerial threats with a beam of light at effectively the speed of light. Recent trials showed it successfully downed high-speed drones, and a £316 million contract will fit the system to Royal Navy Type 45 destroyers from 2027.
