I’ll never forget the day we showed up to Violet’s elementary school art club and they told her she couldn’t come in.
They said it in front of all the kids.. including her brother who was also attending.
Violet cried, "I’m a good girl, why can’t I go?”
Everyone was staring.
I had given five weeks' notice that Violet would need the 1:1 aide that was written into her IEP, something she had always had before.
And yet, they still denied her.
That day, I held her as she sobbed in the parking lot. And for weeks after, she cried every time we dropped her brother off for art club without her.
She still talks about that experience to this day. 💔
I’m sharing this because:
➡️ No child deserves to go through that
➡️ Every parent should know that if your child has an IEP, the school is legally required to provide the supports and services they need to access school-sponsored activities.
This is not optional.
So if you’re ever told your child “can’t participate,” bring it to the IEP team ...
