Mary Sheffield made history as Detroit’s first woman mayor in the city’s 324-year history.� Ghazala Hashmi was elected Virginia’s lieutenant governor, becoming the first Muslim woman to hold statewide office in Virginia. Abigail Spanberger was elected Virginia’s governor, marking the first time Virginia will have two women serving as governor and lieutenant governor simultaneously. Kaohly Her became the first woman mayor and first Hmong mayor of St. Paul. Christal Watson became the first Black woman mayor of Wyandotte County, Kansas.
Why does this matter for girls in sports? Because 94% of women in C-suite positions played sports growing up. Leadership learned on the field translates directly to leadership in boardrooms, courtrooms, and city halls.
When girls see women leading at every level, they understand their own potential has no ceiling.
