I’ve flown in and out of Bergamo ( Italy) so many times, but never stopped to actually see the city. This time, I gave myself 5 hours to explore—and I’m so glad I did. I took the historic funicular up to Città Alta, the old heart of Bergamo, perched above the modern city and surrounded by Venetian walls. It’s like stepping into another time. I wandered cobblestone streets, visited the Civic Archaeological Museum, climbed the Campanone tower for panoramic views, and stood in awe in Piazza Vecchia—the soul of the upper town. The Palazzo della Ragione, street art tucked into hidden corners, and peaceful moments in the Parco delle Rimembranze made the short visit unforgettable.
