Namibia got independence in March 1990. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. That gap is tighter than you think.
While Berlin was the testing ground for which ideology would win, Africa was the chessboard. SWAPO needed weapons. The West wasn’t offering. The Soviets and Cuba were. Cuban soldiers fought South Africa in Angola. US Congress hit South Africa with sanctions. Pressure from both sides. South Africa came to the table.
But the Berlin Wall had already fallen before Namibia’s independence day. The system that armed the liberation was dying. Choosing communism at that point would have been like buying stock in a company already filing for bankruptcy.
Timing is everything.
