“Leave your baggage at the door” I always hated this line yoga teachers would often say at the beginning of the practice. Sure, let me just pretend these wild thoughts in my head and feelings in my heart don’t exist and “leave them” behind. Yeah right. Don’t you think we would have left them behind ages ago if it were only so easy? In a way, I think we should be doing the opposite: bring your “stuff” with you into the practice. Allow your yoga class to be a supplement to your weekly therapy, micro-dosing or yelling-at-your-partner/roadrage routine. This is a safe place to fully feel and indeed heal. This doesn’t mean we need to be intellectualizing or ruminating about all our baggage and the many frustrations of our life. Rather, the opportunity here is to WITNESS the thoughts and feelings and stickiness and maybe breathe into them. Allow them to wash in and out of your awareness like a wave or a breath.
