Geodes typically begin as cavities within volcanic or sedimentary rock. In the case of choya geodes, these voids form when gas bubbles or organic material leave behind empty pockets. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater infiltrates these cavities, carrying dissolved ions such as silica (SiO₂), calcium, or iron. As environmental conditions fluctuate—particularly temperature, pressure, and pH—the solution becomes supersaturated. This triggers nucleation, where atoms begin organizing into stable crystal lattices. Once nucleation sites form on the inner walls, crystal growth proceeds via layer-by-layer deposition, governed by diffusion rates and the minimization of free energy.
